Health Legder Dead of Possible Overdose

UPDATE 1/23/08:

The more information that comes out about this tragic story, the sadder it becomes.

Apparently, the Oscar nominated actor was going through difficult times and had recently split from fiancée Michelle Williams.  Some over the counter sleeping pills have been linked to the actor’s death but police reports do indicate a possible accidental suicide. Heath had a two year old daughter at the time of his death.

On a personal note, I was excited to see him in the upcoming “Batman: The Dark Knight” film, where Heath plays the role of Batman’s most formidable foe, “The Joker”. Heath has gained an enormous amount of fan support for his energetic and commanding screen presence particularly from this role.  I anticipate Heath’s “Joker” performance to out-do even Jack Nicholson’s “Joker” performance in the Original Batman (1989). Warner Brothers, the owners of the Batman franchise, have not released any information whether or not certain scenes from TDK may be edited in respect to the actor’s untimely death.

Just got word Hollywood actor Heath Ledger, from Brokeback Mountain and the upcoming Batman “The Dark Night” film, was found dead in his NYC apartment on 3:26pm 1/22/08.

MSNBC is reporting he had an appointment for a massage at his Manhattan apartment when his housekeeper found him unconscious. After receiving no response from the actor they called authorities. Authorities believe death to be drug related.

Heath was 28. He will be sorely missed.

From barbarian to cyborg, Arnold knows how to kick ass. He is the essence of action heroes, a symbol of on-screen strength, he is the stereotypical superstar.

One Missed Call Ringtone

I just say that movie, One Missed Call, and its sucked. Bottom line, there were continuity issues, the dialogue was weak, and the overall movie just was not fun. However, there are 2 small things that I do love about the film.

#1. The movie poster.

One Missed Call

Is this a creepy poster or what. In fact, the poster is scarier than the movie. The first time I saw the poster I thought we had another “The Ring” movie coming out but OMC definitely feel short, way short.

#2. The Ringtone

The movie is about a ghost that is somehow trapped in a cellphone (ahem lame) and when you get a call with a particular ringtone it means that you are going to die, etc etc. It’s slightly more clever than that of course but I’m too disappointed to really go into detail.

Regardless, that ringtone was really creepy and I have it here for you if you would like to be creeped out at 3am when your drunk friend calls you. You don’t have to have seen the movie to get goose bumps when you hear it.

Overall, these are the best things that came out of this movie and guess what, they are free. Do yourself a favor and save your $10 for when Cloverfield comes out 1.18.08

KITT And The HOFF are BACK!

KITT 2.O

It’s TRUE!

Recently NBC revealed plans for a made for TV Knight Rider movie including the HOFF! I love stangs but I hate the fact that KITT will be a stang in this 2.0 rendition. They should have made him the 09′ Camaro, at least that is closer to the classic Trans Am from the original show. Regardless. the Shelby Stang is a tight ride and even if this movie bombs (which is most likely will) Knight Rider is one of my favorite all time show s and I’m excited it got picked up for another go around like this.

Easter Promises Delivered

Easter Promises

Yesterday I got a chance to catch an advanced screening of David Cronenberg’s new Russian Gangster Thriller “Eastern Promises” with post movie Q&A from the director himself. If you are asking yourself, “Where have I heard that name before?” David Cronenberg is the same dude who did History of Violence, The Fly, and Scanners. So you can sort of tell this movie isn’t really going to hold back any punches. The movie has a great cast. Naomi Watts (The Ring) plays the lead female role. Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings) plays Nikolai, the lead male role. And Vincent Cassel (Oceans 13) is great in his supporting actor role as ‘Kirill’. The screenplay was written from the same writer as “Pretty Dirty Things” Steven Knight.

After being herded into the small but comfortable Director’s Guild Theatre on 57th and 6th in Manhattan I was ready to hop on the Croneneberg Violence express. His movies, I find, tend to be very intense with heavy tones of “justified” violence and human aggression. The movie opens up to a very stereotypical gangster scene with your typical execution at a barber shop. Fortunately, every scene after the opening is anything but typical. Right after the execution, there is a scene of a woman giving birth and here we are introduced to one of the many opposing forces which truly make this movie worthwhile and exciting to watch. In fact, I found the overall pace of the movie to be quite sluggish (with exceptions here and there). If it wasn’t for the multitude of opposing themes (light vs. dark, death vs. birth, violence vs. tenderness) that cloud the movie from start to finish, I don’t think I would have liked it so much.

There was one scene in particular that stands out for me and I am sure it will stand out for you if and when you see it. The scene will most likely make many Top 10 lists for Violence and just as an overall kick ass action scene. It takes place in a sauna and I don’t want to give anything away because I think it’s such an awesomely well done intelligent and artistic scene but I will say this: be prepared for a no holds barred naked knife fight between Viggo and some gangsters. As I say that I realize that there is no way you will be prepared for this so just try your best not to look away at any time during this blood fest of a fight scene. According to the director the scene was filmed in 2 days and was meant to show Viggo’s character in a state of vulnerability. In this state of vulnerability, the audience may question whether or not violence is justified. For example, a cornered animal is more justified in its attack.

Overall, I thought that “Eastern Promises” is an intelligent, artistic, and aggressive film from a director that I consider to be one of the top directors in the game. His films are innovative, progressive and iconic in this genre. When watching a Cronenberg, expect the unexpected, be ready for anything, but most of all look forward to being wowed.

Transformers

I got a chance to catch the new Transformers movie this weekend and WOW!!!  Off the bat, lets get one things strait: Michael Bay has as much ability to create movies with character development as I have the ability to fly.   However, no one went to see Transformers for the character development. No, you went to see the movie because you wanted to see giant robots beat each other to a metallic pulp and than transform into exotic cars that disappear in a cloud of smoke.  And this movie was full of that!  In fact, I felt that I was watching one long action scene from beginning to end. Below is what I liked and disliked about the film.

(SPOILERS! BEWARE)

Here is what I thought was great about the film:

#3.  You would think that after watching the robots transform several times it would get old towards the end of the film, but it didn’t.  The transformations were incredible every time you saw them. Every part and piece looked like it went flawlessly where it was  meant to go.  Every transformation was the epitome of cool.

#2. Shia Beouf. This kid is an awesome talent. There is no doubt in my mind he will have a long and prosperous career in Hollywood (as long as he doesn’t hang out with Paris Hilton).  His acting was spot on. Kudos to the casting director.

P.S. Props again to the casting director for the addition of Megan Fox.  Google her to find out what I’m talking about. Seriously. No Seriously.

#1. Non-stop action from beginning to end! I may have had an eye-gasm, LOVE THE ACTION!

Here are the (minor) flaws about the film:

#3.  The little transforming Decepticon. Why is he there? Why is he so lame?

#2. Product placement. I know you have to do this to fund the gi-normous budget of the film but every time I saw a Mountain Dew Machine in the background I died a little inside.

#1.  Is Megatron dead? And why?!! Megatron was awesome (even though he was only in the last 30 minutes of the film). If he is dead I’m not watching the next one. Bring Megatron back! Get Justin Timberlake if you have to I don’t care just do it!.

I don’t think any other director could have handled this movie concept better than Michael Bay.  Immediately after seeing the film I knew it was going to be a record breaking box office showing.  They definitely set it up for a sequel so hopefully they can continue to play on the things they did right in the second film and leave the minor flaws (and the little transforming Decepticon) behind.   I highly recommend seeing this film.  Don’t do it for yourself, do it for the little 13 year old kid inside of you who will always think giant transforming robots from outer space are cool. Why? because he’s right, they are.

Giant F*ing Robots Are Coming!

giant F#$%ing robots are coming!
This is a pretty sick T-Shirt being sold (and worn on set by Michel Bay himself) at http://www.michaelbay.com. I personally grew up watching Transformers as a child on Saturday mornings so I was really excited when they first announced the live action movie. I can’t wait until it comes this 4th of July weekend, I’m sure it will make a buttload of money. I don’t know if I would necessarily buy this shirt and wear it around but I really like the idea of having a shirt that says Giant fucking robots are coming. Did I mention that the profits go to charity? All dorkyness aside, I think that in its own way the shirt is an adult way to pay homage to a cartoon/comic that a lot of us grew up and considered “cool” back in the day. Hopefully, the next generation of snotty nose kids will also see how cool Transformers really are. Check out the T-Shirt, let me know what you think.
